This week, we’ve been chatting with Bodil Perneborn, an architect at Kaka Arkitekter, to talk about Helio Slussen – a new coworking space in Stockholm that has become a popular spot for local businesses and freelancers alike.
Can you tell us about the concept behind Helio Slussen and how BAUX materials fit into that vision?
The inspiration was space. We wanted to create a sense of curiosity and calm. BAUX acoustic panels were perfect because they help acoustically and add details to the visual story. We used them in areas where we wanted to manage the acoustics, like the café and the entrance.
Were acoustics a challenge on this project?
Yes, mainly in the entrance area. It’s a large open space with glass windows, high ceilings, and hard floors – the kind of space where sound can really bounce around and become overwhelming. We needed to create a more intimate feel, and BAUX’s designs helped to make the space feel cosy and cared for, even though it’s physically quite large. We also used BAUX in the conference rooms. These spaces needed to feel focused, and the BAUX tiles added texture and patterns to the walls to create interest.
What role did sustainability play in your design choices?
Sustainability is always a priority, and BAUX materials were an easy choice because we wanted materials that would last and could handle daily wear. It’s not just about environmental sustainability but also creating a socially sustainable environment—one that feels good to be in and that people will want to keep using for a long time. BAUX materials have helped us to do that.
How did BAUX contribute to the overall atmosphere of Helio Slussen?
I love that the materials aren’t just functional, they’re colourful and can be easily customized to create a textured, organic feeling that softens a space. In the entrance area, we needed to create good acoustics. The BAUX designs do that and create a visual element. You get this expansive, open space, but it doesn’t feel cold or empty. It feels welcoming. That’s what coworking spaces should be – a place where you want to stay and feel at home, even while you’re working.
What’s the feedback been like from the client and coworkers using the space?
The client is really happy, and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Helio Slussen has become one of their most popular coworking locations in Stockholm. People love the versatility of the space – whether they’re grabbing a coffee, having a quick meeting, or working in one of the breakout rooms, the space feels supportive. BAUX materials definitely helped to make the space feel functional and welcoming.
What would be your dream BAUX project?
I’d love to use BAUX in schools to create calm areas in busy spaces. There’s so much you can do with the colours, too. It would be really cool to use BAUX materials to make internal structures as well!
