All around the world, designers and architects are using the BAUX acoustic tiles and panels in exiting projects for exiting brands. In a series of newsletters we aim to introduce you to a selection of projects and the mindmasters behind designs of these acoustic artworks. We simply will call these newsletters Interviews #.
This week we’ve been catching up with Chiara Cantilena and Chris Pyle from LOM Architecture and Design to hear about the BAUX designs in RocketSpace, Islington.
Tell us a bit about the project?
RocketSpace is a workspace that nurtures the next generation of tech giants by providing multi-gigabit internet, trend talks, networking and peer group testing. The building was disused cash holding centre for a major financial institution. It was in a bad state and we stripped out virtually everything taking it back to the structural core of brick and concrete. We utilize atypical spaces above and below the ground, to create a unique workspace.
Why did you choose BAUX?
We’ve used BAUX before and knew it would solve the problems we had with echoes and reverberation throughout the building. The colours and shapes meant we could build subtle textures that worked with RocketSpace branding. The wood wool textures contrasted very well with the concrete.
How did the BAUX designs transform the space?
They made a huge difference acoustically. The space wasn’t liveable as it was, but the BAUX applications meant we could create a unique workspace in the subterranean levels. Meeting rooms also benefitted from excellent sound insulation.
Visually, the wood wool tiles provided another texture tone to compliment the concrete and brick walls. We used the triangle BAUX tiles to create patterns that worked in harmony with RocketSpace branding.
How have people reacted?
The building is up for design awards and feedback has been great. It’s a very popular workspace and we haven’t had any complaints about the acoustics!
